The groundbreaking ceremony for the Resettlement Housing Programme of Moragolla Hydropower Project, was held on June 25th, 2017, with the participation of Hon Minster for Power & Renewable Energy Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Hon Deputy Minister for Mahaweli Development and Environment Anuradha Jayaratne, Hon Kandy District Member of Parliament Ananda Aluthgamage, General Manager CEB, Eng. A K Samarasinghe, Additional General Manager (Projects), Eng. S D W Gunawardana, Project Director (Moragolla Power Plant) Eng. H D C Jayaratne and other distinguished guests.
Resettlement Housing Programme provides resettlement facilities to the families of the few houses which will be removed from the area due to safety considerations. This Housing Programme aims to raise the standard of living of these families by providing better facilities.
Moragolla Hydropower Project is expected to construct a 30.2MW hydropower plant with an annual energy generation of 100 GWh. The project involves construction of a 37m high, 236 m long concrete gravity dam across the Mahaweli river close to Ulapane in Gampola. The project, which would add another member to the environment friendly family of power plants, is expected to be completed in 2022.
